Flash To An "A" by Christian - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

It’s time for the most dreaded period of the school year: Finals week. Students rush to the library to study for countless hours trying to read every bit of information in order to be prepared for his or her test. While some students stress about studying for what may seem like forever, others have their own study method in which it helps them either keep focus, seem studying easier, or may even be a fun game. In my case, I have seen that studying with flash cards helps immensely with not just one subject, but also any subject in particular.

The standard way most students “study” is by reading straight from a book for long periods of time. Using flash cards to study is more effective, also making studying more fun while being challenged to learn the material. You can get a group of friends together and challenge one another with the flash cards to make things even more interesting. Personally, they helped me with a couple challenging classes my junior and senior year in high school. I used flash cards for Calculus and AP English both years and they really helped a lot. My Calculus class was rigorous and I was expected to learn derivatives, integrals, and other rules of calculus in which I would be tested on. Using flash cards, I studied every day for about a week including some days with friends and each area I was tested on, I passed with no less than an A. On the same hand, in English I had to learn a lot of new vocabulary words, and with English not being my strongest subject in school, I came back to my study method by using flash cards. Using the cards really helped me out, I would write the word on one side and the definition on the backside, and by doing so I learned a lot of new words and expanded my vocabulary.

All in all, not only did the flash cards make it less boring to study, but it also opened the door to having fun while studying. I never thought it was possible to have fun while you study, but it is in the sense that a group of friends and I would challenge each other to do better and bet one another on who learned their flash cards more than the other. Using this study method I managed to get higher grades on quizzes, exams, and the class overall than what I had expected. I started using flash cards to study in high school due to my difficult classes, and because of the great success it brought me, I will carry this study method onto college.
