A class of Speech is necessary by Christelle - June 2025 Scholarship Essay
Among the elective classes I've taken, the one I am truly grateful for is Speech. I believe it should be a required course for everyone. The importance of effective communication is universal; no matter your chosen major or career path, there will come a time when you need to speak in public—whether at a wedding, a funeral, a church service, or a family gathering. Even in workplaces where public speaking might seem irrelevant, there could be moments when you're asked to present an idea or share a message.
The benefits of a Speech class extend beyond public speaking. It teaches essential tools for effective communication, greatly enhancing their ability to express ideas and connect with others. These skills are advantageous not only in formal speaking settings but also in everyday conversations and interactions. A speech class helps students learn how to convey their thoughts clearly, engage their audience, and understand non-verbal communication cues.
Moreover, mastering public speaking can be a significant asset in the job market. Employers often seek candidates who are confident communicators, as these skills can lead to better collaboration and leadership. As someone who has taken a speech class, I can attest that it not only prepares you for public speaking but also fosters the ability to build rapport and persuade listeners effectively.
In a world where communication is key to success, incorporating a speech class into the core curriculum would empower students with the confidence and skills they need to thrive in both their personal and professional lives.
