Passion by Chrisitna - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Being a college professor is a lot of responsibility and at one point in my life I considered pursuing such a career. I had just completed my physics course in high school and thought about how great it would be to teach it. For me physics is nowhere near boring and everything that I learned are things that happen every day thus making it easier to understand. I began to think about the salary of a college professor and if it was worth it, then again, I would be their mentor, the person to whom they would come to for a recommendation letter for a university, more importantly I would want to be more like their friend than their professor.
Physics is fun and so is teaching it and for the first time I will be the fun teacher everyone loves! Take, for example, a lab, in science classes students are required to complete a lab. Labs can be either fun or not, it depends how knowledgeable the students are of the concepts and how well the group works together to complete the activity. For my class labs, however, I would include food and class labs as much as possible, thus creating less tension and pressure among the individuals. Also for those who are having trouble understanding the concepts or need guidance for life's everyday troubles I would offer them my personal phone number, my email, and time after class to discuss such things. Though it is my goal to make sure students are passing sometimes the reason goes beyond the concepts. Lastly as a professor who would want her students to pass I would make an announcement to all my students that those who earned a C or better in the class will get a free trip to six flags. I believe these three combined will serve as a great motivator for all students to participate more and work harder inside and outside the classroom.
As fun of a teacher as I intend on being I would never let my class become an easy A. Though I would intend on bumping them up to a 90 if a student is at an 89.99 there would be requirements for me to take such an action. The students must have tried their best in the class because as I assign students to attend, participate, and do all the course work I would expect them to see to it. For those who fail to do so or for the overachievers I will offer extra credit opportunities. Though this would help bump up some grades I would go through and evaluate the papers for plagiarism and to make corrections where necessary, much like an English teacher would. I want the students brain to grow and learn from my class, not sit and stare.
Passion is what would motivate me the most because physics is such a fun subject and I want to see everyone pass it, which is why I am willing to sit and listen to what the students have to say and help them find a solution. Passion is what will drive me to go above and beyond the original curriculum of the coursework. Passion is what will wake me up in the morning to go to school and teach. Passion will be my reason why I chose this subject.
Physics teachers face a lot of responsibility and insightful questions from their students. Such a subject helps us understand the world around us. If I were a physics teacher the last thing I would want is for my class to be a drag. I would want my students to have fun and understand. I would want my overflowing passion to guide the students so that they understand the importance of physics and see how much I love my job and spreading my knowledge so that they are motivated to increase theirs.
