The Greater Purpose by Chris - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Many individuals leave their homeland to obtain greater education. Obviously it has some kind of value to it, but what’s the purpose of it? Even rappers like Jay-Z acknowledge the importance of education, “I'm hungry for knowledge. The whole thing is to learn every day, to get brighter and brighter. That's what this world is about. You look at someone like Gandhi, and he glowed. Martin Luther King glowed. Muhammad Ali glows. I think that's from being bright all the time, and trying to be brighter.” The purpose of education is to essentially obtain knowledge. Knowledge therefore in my perspective being a greater understanding of things. That meaning the purpose of education, is to grab hold of a better understanding.

It’s important to learn. Education is said to be worth more than money (even though we pay for it, so it’s slightly hypocritical). Education serves us a dish of knowledge though. Its purpose is to as was stated to give us a better understanding. A better understanding of what though? A better understanding of what not to do and what not to do. A better understanding of how to solve something without guessing, and a better understanding of right from wrong. Education teaches these things. Problem solving is taught through math, a better understanding is taught through history (a better understanding of not repeating bad history and the steps not to take). Right and wrong is taught through every subject, but English also serves as learning to appreciate something. You learn to appreciate past writing and articles.

` The purpose of education serves is to teach you lessons on almost everything essential in life. You must learn to appreciate, you must learn to have a better understanding, you must learn to problem solve, and you must learn right from wrong. All these lessons in education create a better world and one in which bad events are less likely to repeat themselves.
