I want to show that Black Lives Matter. by Chloe - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
As I get ready to embrace the reality that I am now a college senior, I look over to my car keys, my wallet, and my cell phone. These are the things, God forbid, I would have to have in case of an emergency. They are also the things that I carry with me at all times, especially when I'm driving. To be a better student this year, I want to advocate the importance of getting an education, especially for POC (People of Color).
Police brutality in America is at an all time high, and I want to show people that I'm more than just my 3.4 GPA, my dreadlocks, and my lanky frame. Standing at 5'7 and weighing only 100 pounds, with dark skin, I know that I am an easy target. I want to set a positive example to the younger generation, and show that anything is possible, with faith and hard work. When I graduate next year, I will do so in honor of my father, who died when I was 13, and for others that don't have a voice, such as Sandra Bland, Bettie Jones, Trayvon Martin, and Mike Brown.
Thank you, for listening to my story.
