One elective that should be a required class in high school is art. Although subjects like math and English are extremely important, creative expression is just as important. Taking art gives high school students the chance to have a relaxing class where they can express themselves through many different art forms. Art can help with mental health and allow students to connect with themselves. High school can become very stressful when students constantly worry about grades and all the assignments they must complete. Most of the time, these classes are very overwhelming because there is a set way to do things, but with art, there is no wrong way to do anything. Art class would be the perfect creative release that students need when overwhelmed by everything else. Even students who wouldn't consider themselves great at art could enjoy participating in it. Besides helping with mental health, art can also help students connect with themselves. This is because art gives students an outlet to express all of their thoughts and emotions freely. Whether through a painting, a poem, or even a sculpture, there are so many different ways art can be expressed. Through art, students can explore their beliefs, interests, values, and identities. While school oftentimes prioritizes accuracy and narrow-minded thinking, requiring art class would remind students that creativity and expression matter as much as Math or English.
