Science and Service: My Vision For Forensic Genetics by Chloe - March 2025 Scholarship Essay
Isn’t it funny how plans change? If you had asked me this question when I was seven years old, I would have said I wanted to possess my own dance studio and marry Austin Moon from “Austin and Ally.” But now that I have a grasp on how life truly works, things are slightly different. As a future biochemistry/molecular biology major, I am committed to helping others in the genetics field and the intersection of genetics in healthcare and law. Through my education, I want to gain the expertise, skills, and network needed to launch a successful career in forensic genetics laboratory services.
In 10 years, I envision myself as a lead researcher in a laboratory, helping law enforcement with several cases daily. My passion for science and genetics specifically has shaped my career path. I’ve always been fascinated by how tiny details, such as the DNA in your finger, can help conclude cases effectively. I have always wanted an occupation that was dedicated to helping others. Although a forensic scientist is not very common, it’s a job that would allow me to contribute to those who might consider it the worst hardship of their life.
Throughout my career, I aspire to learn about all kinds of genetics, including mammals and plants, and use my knowledge to observe details that could be significant in forensics. I also understand that all comprehension of science topics like chemistry, anatomy, and physics would especially be useful in my field. With my current elected courses in molecular biology, dual-enrolled physics, and genetics, these classes are providing me with the technical and theoretical knowledge I need. On top of my current classes, I have also already completed a research internship handling genetics in plants. Being permitted to work with advanced laboratory technology and work independently on my project gave me experience that will only be advantageous towards the rest of my career. I will also attend the University of South Carolina in the fall, planning to apply to the university's research programs with top-tier professors and materials, which will help me gain more industry connections and hands-on experience.
Growing up in a small town with limited access to educational resources, I’ve had to be resourceful and determined to pursue my passions. When I was accepted to the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, I didn’t hesitate to enroll myself to experience that rigorous environment I knew I needed for my future. As I plan to graduate here in the spring, I have learned how to not only overcome obstacles but also how to turn challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.
With the education and opportunities I’m gaining now, I’m confident I will be able to fulfill my dream of making an impact in the forensic genetics field. In the next decade, I know I will have accomplished my goal of being in a forensic lab, potentially even advancing to actual crime scene work. This scholarship will provide me with the financial support needed to continue pursuing my education and, ultimately, my goal of becoming a leader in forensic science laboratory services.
