The Dreams My Future Holds by Chloe - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up I always dreamed of having a job where I could help people, especially kids. During my sophomore year of high school, I learned about social work and realized that was exactly what I had always wanted to do. Now that I am only a few months away from going to college and majoring in social work, I have a new anticipation for the opportunities that lie ahead. After my social work internship this past summer, I found a deep love and care for children in the foster care system. In the next few years, I would love to get new experiences in the foster care world so I can learn how to best serve that community.
In ten years, I hope to be a case manager for these children and walk beside them to try and find the best placement for them. I also hope to be an adult that they can trust and feel safe around. I have learned how difficult it is for so many of these children to trust anyone. Many even lose hope for their own future. In this position, I will do all I can to bring them the safest and healthiest environment possible in order to lead them to healing.
My internship showed me how different each day as a social worker can be, as you interact with new people, visit homes, attend information meetings, and so much more. I am a person who prefers to be busy and constantly doing things so I feel this job type will be perfect for me.
A few years ago I was given a book called “Kisses for Katie.” In this autobiography, a young woman left all she had known to travel to Uganda for mission work. While there, she decided to stay and adopt thirteen children, forever changing their lives. After reading this book, my heart was completely filled with a desire to travel to Africa to serve the children there as Katie did.
I had always dreamed of opening an orphanage. While those are big dreams, I feel confident that part of my life will revolve around adoption and mission work, possibly in Africa, at some point. While I do not know for sure what this will look like, I would love to build connections and use my social work skills to serve kids who live there.
Along with my career goals, I see myself married with two children. I have always pictured myself getting married soon after college and a few years later having children. I would like for them to be close in age, like my brother and I, and develop a close bond as they grow up together. I want to raise them to have a heart for service and missions, giving them many opportunities to see the world around them and have a desire to love people well.
As I attend Belmont University next year to study social work along with faith and justice, I hope to attain the skills and knowledge to develop a better understanding of how to best serve those around me. My goal is to have many opportunities around the world to meet a wide variety of people and connect with organizations in the foster care world. I am excited to see where these dreams take me over the next ten years.
