A Positive Impact On The World With No Concern For Time Or Money by Chloe - April 2023 Scholarship Essay
Have the thoughts of what life would be like if you did not have to clock into a nine to five job ever crossed your mind? What if you had unlimited time and money just for applying what you’ve learned in school? Thankfully, I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn in multiple different school settings and trained in multiple different trades. Based on my knowledge in some vastly different skill sets, the possibilities for me to impact the world seem endless. Using what I’ve learned from Cosmetology school, EMT school, and my current program for education, I will try to explain how I could make a positive impact on the world.
Inspiring, educating, and giving back to the future of our world is how I would choose to create a positive impact on the world. Although I may never teach on a broad spectrum, I believe each life that I have a part in educating is an equally important part of tomorrow’s world. If money and time were unlimited, I would choose to address the major flaws in our education system. I would use my knowledge of education to begin to shape a new way for more students to receive an appropriate education. These transformations could not be completed overnight and would take a substantial amount of time to accomplish. When it was all said and done, our local education system would be phenomenal and other districts could use our strategies to better their district’s education.
My first step in fixing our education system would be to evaluate the credibility of teachers serving our local school system. I would use our local school system as a catalyst to reform school systems statewide and set an example of what reform can do. I would work with local government agencies to bring about higher funding for teachers and bring back performance-based salaries. I would cut costs on overhead and get as close to the old days as humanly possible. Teachers do not need someone who has never even been in a classroom to tell them how to do their job. I would redesign the qualifications of administration. The requirements would be that candidates have to have served as a homeroom teacher for each grade level before they were even considered for an administrative position. Teachers would have the ability to criticize their administrator’s capabilities, just as the administrators would oversee critiquing the capabilities of the teachers. If teachers are not effectively educating students, they need to be trained in the appropriate ways to educate or find a new position. I would focus less on the paper qualifications that teachers held and more on the quality of instruction they are providing. I would engage students in life skills and create a rigorous curriculum that would both challenge students and allow students to develop a higher understanding of the materials. I would commission parents to be more involved in students’ education and allow them to have a say in how and what their students were being educated about. I would make it mandatory for parents to serve as a substitute at least once a year per child that they have enrolled and allow them to give feedback on what they think needs to be different. I would cultivate a culture that supports teachers at every level of education and allow them the freedom to educate their students the way they deem necessary. Discipline would be handled by the parents and if a student presents a behavior problem, their parents would be notified to come pick them up.
This would be a lengthy process by which multiple school officials and the board would have to be involved. Changes would start immediately, and we would start from the top of the education system and work our way down. I would use the things I’ve learned in school and in my experience to create a better learning environment for students and this would have a lasting impact on the world. The more students learn, the more powerful they become. Powerful people are not easily pushed around or swayed to the opinions of others. Students would be empowered by their education and each one of them would have an equal opportunity to change the world far after I am gone.
