The Importance of College by Chloe - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
From a young age, college is persistently advertised and promoted among grade school, middle school, and high school students. Students are led to believe that college is a goal to reach resulting in a better future for yourself. While this is a widely accepted narrative, it begs the question, is attending college important? When you come to a point in your life where you're about to graduate high school and are thinking about attending a university you have to decide if that is what you need to pursue. I believe that the question at hand is not so black and white because while college can be important, it isn't important to everyone.
A college education can provide you with many advantages depending upon which field of study you are entering. For someone desiring to pursue a career in the medical field it is required for them to have graduated a university as well as medical school after that. Whether or not college is important to attend depends on whether or not one would be benefited by a degree for their future career. Electricians, for example, can pursue an apprenticeship while taking a class at a trade school and after a certain amount of hours of work and class can obtain their licence. However, if this electrician wanted to open their own electrical business someday, they may benefit on a greater level if they also go to college and major in business or something that would benefit them in the long run for opening their own company.
College shouldn't be looked at as if it is necessary for a successful life, but rather as a stepping stone to getting where one aspires to be. Not everyone who attends college uses the things they spent time and money learning there in their everyday jobs after they graduate. Some graduate with debt that follows them around for years. However, some use the skills they learn and practice there throughout their life in their careers and wouldn't have been able to obtain the job they have if they hadn't had a certain degree.
So when deciding whether or not college is important, it is vital to keep these things in mind. The importance of attending college is not based on if college is the right choice for all people. How important college is can be found by how well it benefits the individual deciding whether or not to go.
