Contrasting Ideologies by Chloe - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
Differences of opinion and conflicting ideologies are on what this country was founded. It is human nature to disagree and for emotions to escalate when this disagreement occurs, and the offense is taken. The question arises, however, of the quality and humility of this disagreement and offense, and if this approach is the best way to lead our people.
If I were to have dinner with any U.S. President, it would be for Donald Trump. My answer is not so to attract attention or to try and be unoriginal, but simply for the reality that I do not agree with any single belief for which he stands. We fall on completely opposite sides of the spectrum and are completely antithetical people. I believe in the rights of every individual. I think that each and every person has their own personality, story, opinion, background, ethnicity, etc., and I believe that all of these aspects deserve an open, safe space to be heard by anyone willing to share them.
Because of all of the negative press associated with Donald Trump, I have made my own assumptions about his identity. I would like to speak directly to the source to expand my horizons to better learn how to accept those with whom I do not agree. I believe that communication, open communication, is the best way to solve any problem. People in our society today tend to stray away from confrontation, as it creates an uncomfortable setting for both parties and is often quite hard to initiate. However, if everyone were to say exactly how they feel in every situation where instead they chose to stifle themselves to save someone else’s feelings, there would be less anxiety, passive aggressiveness, and anger hidden within the relationships that really matter.
Society today is so divided. Republicans versus Democrats, Christian versus Atheist, pro-life versus pro-choice, and so much more. Human beings are blinded by their own stubbornness. The majority of people have decided to not affiliate with those from the other side, mainly because they do not want to hear what the others have to say. This is what prompted my answer to this question. The one person with whom I have the least in common is the person with whom I should sit down and talk. That is why, if given the opportunity, I would choose to have dinner with President Donald Trump.
