The Power of Creative Writing by Cheyenne - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

Think back to when you were first learning how to read and were given flashcards with letters and short words on them. You were expected to learn the sounds each letter could make and learned how to sound out words that you did not know yet. Now, recall some of the first books you ever read. Maybe you liked Dr. Seuss or Goodnight Moon. Those were my favorites. Now think about all of the books you have read in your lifetime. Recall how the stories captured your attention and you spent hours imagining scenarios in your head, forgetting that you were reading words on paper. I used to read Magic Tree House books and be teleported into the story myself, forgetting that I was sitting on the floor of my room until I had finished the book. Since I first learned how to read, I have always loved reading fiction books, often struggling to put the book down until I reach the end. Creative writing takes more forms than just books though. Newspaper columns, product advertisements, TV shows, films, and much more are all products of creative writing. It is almost everywhere you look. That is the power of creative writing.
I believe creative writing should be a required class because it provides a creative outlet for anyone and everyone. You can create entire worlds in your head and share them with others through your writing. Learning how to share your ideas and perspectives with others is part of creative writing and is important for all students to learn. Creative writing can be used in a variety of essay types and I believe it is important for engaging readers. Argumentative writing requires you to express your opinions and challenges you to provide supporting arguments to support your viewpoint. You must defend your reasoning and you may even change your viewpoint after doing thorough research on the topic. Creative writing allows you to challenge your own ideas and to express yourself in a way that is not offered through most courses, so not all students develop these skills.
I believe creative writing connects you more with yourself and allows you to discover things you never knew about yourself. Writing persuasive essays exposes you to new perspectives you may have never considered, while writing narrative pieces brings out your creative side and allows you to express your emotions in a safe and exploratory way. I believe journaling is beneficial and helps individuals brainstorm creative ways to tackle their everyday challenges and feel more in control of their life. The benefits of learning creative writing go beyond the classroom setting and can help you be a better person, with a more open mind. If it is a required course, I believe it would help individuals be more self-sufficient and happier. Through the course, they will have learned a way to truly feel their emotions and use those emotions to write something that they can look back on and be proud of. They will learn how to better express their opinions and support their ideas. And most importantly, they will be able to engage their readers and make sure their voice is fully heard through their writing.
