Innovation in the right direction by Cheyenne - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

Throughout high school, students take several elective classes, mostly just for fun or as an easy one hundred. For me on the other hand, I have taken elective classes that relate to my career of interest. For example, I took ‘drafting’ because I would like to be an Engineer one day, and I took ‘marketing’ because it helped me learn the ropes of different business styles. Even though I have taken multiple elective classes, drafting was by far the most beneficial to my future career goals.
With wanting to be a Civil or Architectural Engineer in the future, drafting was a very important class for me. In drafting, we learned how to design layouts and make blueprints using a computer program called AutoCAD. Every once in awhile, we created an object on the computer and sent it to the 3D printer we had in the classroom, in order to make it a real life object. Along with learning a lot of valuable skills in that class, I also enjoyed it very much. Since I was the only female in that class it had its challenges but overall, I learned a lot from it.
After taking drafting, it solidified my thoughts about becoming an Engineer. I enjoy the creativity that it allows me and the innovative skills it requires. Drafting allowed me to get an insight on what being an Engineer would really be like. It not only educated me but gave me communication skills as well. Not many females go into the Engineering field and being the only girl in my drafting class taught me how to handle that.
In conclusion, I am really glad that I decided to take a drafting class. If I did not take it, there would still be a lot that I need to learn. I now know how to navigate a few computer drafting programs. I also know how to make hard copies using drafting tools. Drafting class really impacted my education and my future career as an Engineer.
