Studying Tips from A Person Who Hates Studying by Cheyenne - May 2016 Scholarship Essay
Studying is something that I've always hated and, until my senior year, I didn't really know how to. I've always been the type of student who gets A's and B's without studying, my parents would tell me that if I studied, I'd get straight A's. I do agree now that I'm entering college and I see the error in my thinking. If I study, I get better grades. So what does this mean? As finals round the corner for everyone, I have developed a way to study that works for those who hate to study.
Firstly, set up a clean and quiet place. It could be outside or in a bedroom; wherever it may be, it must be clean. I have found that a messy study area personally makes it difficult for me to focus. My area is in my room with my laptop to my right and headphones in my ears on my favorite station on Spotify. My room is comfortable and clean and people know to leave me be.
The next thing I do to make studying easier for me is I grab something to munch on or chew gum, and I drink water. My snack is most often something healthy like an apple, peaches, pears, carrots, or other snacks like those. I drink water instead of a sugary drink such as pop, or soda, because the sugary drink clutters my mind and I can't think straight.
Finally, the thing I do to make studying easier for me is I take breaks whenever I feel I'm becoming frustrated. On top of taking small little breaks to collect myself, I reread all my material and make little notes. Since I learn by listening and writing, I rewrite notes that I took and recite them back to myself. Each time I rewrite, I reword the notes into my own words which helps me remember things better.
These are all the things I do to study for finals and in general. I came up with these things after twelve years of school and, as a soon to be college freshman entering the Engineering field, I can confidently say that I am comfortable with my studying habit I made for myself. I hated studying before because I didn't understand how I could do it, but now I do. It may have taken a long time but I found what works for me and now studying isn't a chore, but a habit. My suggestion to students having a hard time studying is that no matter how hopeless it may feel, do not give up trying to because one day you'll find what works best for you and studying will become a habit and not a chore.
