Human Trial and Error by Chelsea - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
If someone would’ve told me at 6 years old that I would change my dream career as I grew older, I probably would’ve laughed square in their face. Sadly, their statements are true, and I’m eating their words years later. When I was a little girl, it was my dream to become an artist. My mother would constantly buy me coloring books or canvases with watercolor paint. She further promoted my career choice by enrolling me in my neighborhood’s art club at the recreation center.
Despite my love for art, my interest waned from that field of work. As I grew older and went into middle school, or junior high school, my attention became centered on fashion design. I still remember the first dress I drew; I was so proud. The support I had gotten from my family was tremendous and further fueled my desire to become a fashion designer. I used to beg my mother and siblings to buy me sketchpads and colored pencils. My fascination with clothes ran deep; designing them was ideal goal in life. My want to pursue a career in fashion design led me to apply to the only fashion high school in New York City; the High School of Fashion Industries. When I was accepted, I was elated; I would finally be able to learn how to sew fabric to make clothes and learn more about the fashion industry.
However, while at my 4 years at the High School of Fashion Industries, I lost my love for fashion design; it was as if my “creative juices” had finally dried up. I became uninterested in sewing clothes or draping fabric to a dress form. As I matured in high school, I found an affinity for my English and History classes. This led me to changing my career choice from fashion designer to a politician or civil rights lawyer. I took the initiative to gain stronger knowledge of these careers by taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses at my school, such as AP United States History, AP United States Politics and Government and AP English Literature.
As I exit from high school and enter college, I have decided to major in political science with the hopes of achieving my future profession. From my past self to now, I have gone through the “career roller -coaster”; I have gone from being an aspiring artist, to fashion designer to a politician or civil rights lawyer. Through trial and error, I have finally found the right field of work to focus on, and couldn’t be any happier.
