#PhD by Chassidy - April 2018 Scholarship Essay
#PhD; Persistent, Hungry, and Determined. These are things I have always been. No matter the circumstances I have remained persistent. I have always been hungry for learning more, detrmined to obtain my goals, and I have a strong understanding of the value of education. With an education you are unstoppable; it can never be taken from you.
Both of my parents have had their struggles when it comes to their education. My father never finished college, and my mother did not finish until she was in her early thirties. Raising three children, she had to go to school longer than others, but she got her degree. Throughout all their experiences, they have made it their goal to instill in me the love of learning and an understanding of the importance of hard work and dedication.
My family made countless sacrifices for me to succeed and focus on education throughout primary and secondary school, and I could never thank them enough. I now have the opportunity to be the first child in my family to go to college. Attending and completing college will be a time for me to further my education, while becoming a better leader, and pursuing a stable career as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN).
First and foremost, my time spent in college will afford me the opportunity to improve as a leader for my siblings, younger relatives, and friends. Currently, to work towards accomplishing this goal, I participate in a lot of community service organizations such as the Youth Advisory Council at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (YAC), Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC), Ambitious Girls Inc., etc. Attending college will allow me to further my leadership efforts; every college has various organizations and activities that students have the chance to partake in to become a leader while engaging in interactions with their peers. For example, my dream school, Ouachita Baptist University, has an organization called the Ouachita Student Foundation (OSF) that plans a majority of the volunteer work and social events on campus; these events include: Tiger Tunes, Tiger Day, etc. These events all assist in helping the students get acquainted with each other while giving back to the community. They also have various social clubs such as Beta Beta, Kappa Chi, and Rho Sigma that all participate in volunteer work around the community as well.
Furthermore, completing college will provide me with a degree in Biology that I can then use to obtain a stable career in the medical field as an OB/GYN; #PhD. Being an OB/GYN would enable me to work in ensuring women of all financial statuses have adequate healthcare, and I will also be able to give back to my mother, father, siblings, and community. My parents sacrificed so much to make sure I have a good life and I want to show them that I appreciate everything they have done for me, while also helping others to reach their full potential.
Winning this scholarship and a #PhD would help to allow me the chance to attend to college so that I accomplish these things.
Thank you for your consideration.
