My College Goal by Chasidy - July 2015 Scholarship Essay

Other than graduating with my Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Science with a focus in Equine Studies, my goal is to make the most of every day in college. If there's one thing I've learned in the last 18 years, it is that you have to make the most of every day and not let other people get you down. You have to find the positive in every situation and choose to be happy. Everything happens for a reason and things will work themselves out in the end, even if it seems like they won't. Stressing and worrying about issues will only make you feel worse and keep you from living your life. Time goes by so fast, and if you don't make the most of it, you miss out on a lot. Life doesn't stop just because you are having a bad day, you have to pick yourself up and try to have the best time. Life is too short to waste it moping around and stressing out all the time.

I am going to balance my schedule so I have time to study and work, but also leave time for fun and relaxation. I will get my school work done and be able to hang out with friends or join clubs and play sports. If it interests me, I'm going to try it and see if I like it. There are so many opportunities to do amazing things, from studying abroad to community service in the local community. Not only can I make the most of my life, but I can help to make other people's lives a bit better in the process. I can feel good about helping other people and investing my time in something that matters. I don't want to waste my life, because time is something you can't get back once it's gone. If I want my life to mean something and if I want to make an impact, that means I have to make the most of the time I have.

I once watched a YouTube video called The Time You Have in which they laid out one jellybean for each day that the average American will live, which is about 28, 835. The video goes on to remove the time we spend in our first 15 years of life until we start to enter adulthood. Then they take away the time we spend sleeping, eating, working, and other things that we do every day. As more and more jellybeans are taken away, you realise how few there really are. The video asks you how much time you think you've already wasted and what you would do differently if you knew how much time you had left. Eventually it gets down to the last jellybean and asks what you're going to do today. This video really makes you think about things and reconsider the choices you're making. You realise that instead of worrying, you should be out there doing something you love. Since I saw that video, I have been a lot more mindful about wasting my time, and working to make the most of the time that I have left.

My goal in college is to continue making the most of my time without stressing over small issues. I want to have a good time and make a difference. I want my time here on Earth to matter, even if it's only to a few people. There is a quote by Gandhi that says "be the change you wish to see in the world" and it has inspired me to want to make the difference that I am capable of. I want to be happy and make others happy, because I believe that everyone deserves happiness. If I can use my time to make the world a slightly better place and have a good time doing it, then I will have accomplished my goal, but I am not going to stop living my life to the fullest and trying to make a difference.
