Failing Is the First Step by Chasidy - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
During my time as a physics AP student, my fellow classmates and I endured a rigorous curriculum to prepare us not only for the AP test but also for life. We learned many life lessons from our generous teacher, the most important being that failure is a part of life. Do not focus on trying to be perfect because it is not a realistic goal. You will have bad days and good days, and as long as you put forth your best effort then everything will be fine.
Everyone has some sort of failure before their break through moment. Do not beat yourself up because you did not do as well as you had hoped on a test or an assignment. It happens, and you can use it as an opportunity to learn. As our final project, two groups of ten students each had to create a two-person car that used pedaling as its way of traveling. Our physics teacher told us that he would not grade us on how efficiently it worked or if it even worked, for that matter, in the end. He would only grade us on how much we participated with our peers and how we chose to overcome the challenging obstacles we faced when building the car. No, my group's car did not work, but that was okay. We tried our best, and we most certainly learned from our mistakes. That was all he asked for. Everyone in my group received an A on the assignment in the end. Failing is the first step to being amazing at something. Do not give up. Failure does not mean that it is the end of the road. Keep trying and you will make something beautiful.
