Night Life by Chase - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

Coffee seems to be the great equalizer for some students. This magic juice seems to be the answer to the 6 am wake up call. That doesn’t work for me, I can’t stand being completely energized for 4 hours and then being super unproductive for the rest of the day. I work much better at night, when my brain has naturally woken itself up. I much prefer the 7pm study sessions to the 7 am ones.
On one hand, I don’t seem to fall asleep easily, whether I have been awake for 12 hours or 48 it still takes me a bit to fall asleep. So, instead of lying around wasting my time in bed, I’ll stay awake for an hour or so and when I lay back down it’s straight to bed. This is why my most productive time is between 12-1 am, right when I’m not tired enough to sleep but at the same time, awake enough to still have my highest level of work output. This can be seen especially well during finals week, with the information cramming and late nights studying. I stay up late and burn the midnight candle to get as much work done as possible.
Alternatively, I have a more unusual sleeping schedule, due to the fact that I hate getting out of bed in the morning. I stay up late to then wake up early, but I make up for it around 4 o’clock when I take a “power nap”. This is the main reason I can keep up the minimal amount of sleep at night and continue to be a functioning human being at school. Most of the time I wake up feeling well-rested and energized. Which helps me get that extra boost to finish out the day.
Finally, the biggest factor as to why I am a night owl is the distractions. On normal days everyone is awake in the morning and afternoon which makes it hard to get stuff done without an interruption coming up every 30-45 minutes. Now, 12 o’clock is a completely different time, low amounts of people to distract me are awake and I can put all of my focus and attention into my work or project. To me the sacrifice of a few hours of sleep is worth the few hours of pure effort into my work that gets me through the mounds of homework, chores, and responsibilities I have everyday.
In my opinion,
