Small goals equal big dreams by Charlotte - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

My next big educational goal is to set aside more time for reading. Reading used to be a large part of my day when my siblings and I were little. My mom used to take my brothers and I to our local library every Saturday morning. We used to love combing through the shelves and getting to choose what books we wanted to read each week. Back then I would read the books I got from the library before bed. However, once I started the fourth grade two major events altered my love of books. My brothers and I started doing taekwondo and I got my first cell phone. Our Saturday mornings were now spent at our Martial Arts school and my free time was now spent with my cell phone.

Now that I’m a sophomore at the University of Miami I understand the importance of setting aside time to to get lost in an engaging book instead of wasting time on Tik Tok or Instagram. I Googled the best ways to make more time for reading and found many useful tips. I decided to implement some of them like setting my alarm 15 minutes early to sneak in some time to read. Bringing a book on my train ride to work instead of scrolling through my phone. I even looked into joining a reading group to provide motivation and new book recommendations.

Setting educational goals in life is so important because it provides direction and purpose. It helps me to focus my efforts and measure my progress. I also find that setting goals encourages accountability, boost my self discipline and I enjoy celebrating the achievement.
