My Pursuit for Academic Excellence by Charlotte - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Dear Varsity Tutors Scholarship Committee,

When posed with the question, "What motivates you to pursue your academic goals and how do you stay focused?", my mind immediately travels back to a tumultuous period of my life, my freshman year of high school. The transition from middle school to high school was a challenge for me, compounded by the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the world turned upside down, I, like many others, succumbed to the difficulties spurred by the unprecedented situation.

I spent the first semester of my freshman year in the confines of my home, grappling with the new realities of an online academic community. Disconnected from the physical world of school, I faltered, and my performance reflected this. I skipped assignments and Zoom meetings with teachers, and failed to even show up for my finals. By the end of the first semester, I was saddled with almost all D's on my academic report card.

Recognizing my struggle, my school intervened, transitioning me back to in-person classes. Plunged back into the hustle and bustle of a physical academic institution, my motivation reignited. The competitive spirit that had been dormant during virtual classes awakened, spurring me to strive for the improvement of my academic standing. By the end of the second semester, my grades had done a complete flip, boasting almost all A’s.

The transformation highlighted in my early high-school years is the core of what motivates me today. It is not the spirit of competition alone that drives me, but the profound realization that I can and do flourish when surrounded by others. I thrive on the exchange of ideas, the vibrant discussions, and the sense of community that a physical academic setting fosters.

As a rising college freshman at the Missouri University Of Science & Technology, my academic interests are broad, ranging from Biology, English, Environmental Engineering to World Studies and Writing. Whether I am solving complex equations for the environmental challenges we face or penning down a poignant literary analysis, I am motivated by my diverse passions and a persistent yearning for knowledge.

To stay focused, I have learned to balance my competitive spirit with the understanding that the journey is just as important as the finish line. I embrace challenges, celebrate my successes, and perceive my failures as stepping stones towards growth. Engaging in constant self-reflection allows me to assess my progress, learning from my past and making necessary adjustments for my future growth.

In conclusion, my academic journey is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and community. My motivation is the undeniable proof of the improvement I can achieve, fuelled by the stimulating energy of a dynamic academic environment. As I gear up for the next chapter at the Missouri University of Science & Technology, I am eager to contribute to the richness of the academic community, an opportunity made possible with the support of the Varsity Tutors Scholarship.

Thank you for considering my application for this scholarship.

Sincerely,
Charlotte Alspaugh.
