All College Students Should be Required to Study Abroad by Charlotte - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

I believe that all college students should be required to study abroad. Besides experiencing the beauty of another country, it would give our students a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about a new culture, its educational system, language, traditions, customs and beliefs. One could make life long friends and meet future business partners, creating access to international marketing adventures while understanding and developing new outlooks and interest.
As a college student, having an opportunity to study abroad will give the student abilities to adjust and adapt to new surroundings and master diplomacy. Students will learn about the country’s history and its rich cultures and lifestyles. They will learn the currency exchange rates and to adapt to its transportation system because bicycling or walking may be its main form of transportation. The many different foods and flavors that country calls delicacies would be an additional bonus and definitely a memorable experience.
Being and learning in a different country would draw a student out of his or her comfort zone because they would have to interact with the locals for help or directions, which in turn breaks down language barriers, increases self confidence, reliability and independence. Another advantage - meeting the locals - could lead them to the very best authentic eateries and advice on where to go to truly experience other historical landmarks that are off the average guided tour trek.
For communicating abroad, learning the language of the land would be an extremely beneficial skill that could open up doors. Our students may be paid to teach their students English, while back in the states, being bilingual could increase pay in the workplace.
Traditionally, college students studying abroad usually stay with a host family or in a dorm on campus. This could allow one to come in contact with numerous individuals from all over the world, creating possible new relationships that may last a lifetime. All of the above could open up a whole new world.
I believe that all students should be required to study abroad because this type of educational experience may enrich a student’s appreciation and understanding for other countries and have a new found perspective, respect and tolerance for cultures different than their own.
