How Breaking a Finger Brought Inspiration by Charity - November 2022 Scholarship Essay
The most surprising source of inspiration this school year has proved to be breaking my rightmost finger and having to go through surgery to get it corrected, and then implement therapy sessions into my already full schedule. Realizing that I could work through all of the unexpected necessary add-ons due to my broken phalanx, one of the worst parts of a finger to break, and still be able to go about my previous activities was inspiring. Of course, there were aspects of interruption to my schedule, especially right after the surgery, but I was able to jump back into my routine, meet college class deadlines, and continue working and teaching.
My employer shifted the focus of my work so that I could still come in each week, but not put strain of my finger. I was able to read all of my assignments as normal and when it came to submitting them, I found a benefit in technology such as speech to write apps.
Not even my extracurricular activities were greatly affected which was a source of joy to me as I use these activities to give my mind a break from the rigor and mundane aspects of school. American Sign Language (ASL) being a passion of mine has proved to be therapeutic for regaining mobility in my little healing finger. I was thrilled to learn this as I did not have to put a halt on my regular ASL online meetups and broadening my understanding of the language. I also was able to continue going attending my Taekwondo class as the instructor allowed me to participate without putting my reset finger in jeopardy. Who would have known that breaking a bone could actually be a source of inspiration?
