Engaged Learning: A Personal Mission by Cayman - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Dear Members of Varsity Tutors Scholarship Committee,

I am thrilled to apply for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship and humbly present myself as a young student committed to my academic and personal growth. My name is Cayman Humphrey, a determined rising college freshman at North Carolina A&T State University. It gives me great pride to pursue my passion in Civil Engineering at a University renowned for its focus on research and innovation.

I often find myself deeply intrigued by the concept of "studying". It manifests not only an act but an inherent comprehension and progress towards a dedicated destination. In my case, this destination is the successful completion of my Civil Engineering studies. I am profoundly motivated by the image of the future, wherein I stand as a graduate, a well-rounded African American engineer who will defy stereotypes and give a new definition to the possibilities attainable by hard work, dedication, and determination.

However, the concept of “studying” extends beyond textbooks and lab works – it constitutes the quest for knowledge that betters the self, the society, and the world at large. My eyes are fixed on the end goal and the countless opportunities that lie ahead. And as a motivated student, drew upon my mindset to stay focused and maintain a GPA of 3.4 in high school. Although my journey will not be easy, I am excited and eager to embrace and overcome any challenges that may arise.

My inner drive manifests from the understanding that the opportunity to learn is not just about personal growth, but an act of social responsibility. In a world grappling with socio-economic imbalance, infrastructure development, and sustainable practices, it is upon the Civil Engineering community to advance solutions. As a black man, I understand the power of representation in inspiring change and innovation in this professional field. My resolve to excel in Civil Engineering is fueled by this responsibility to contribute positively to my community and, by extension, the world.

To stay focused on my goal, I break it down into achievable actions. I keep reminding myself of the importance of each lecture session or assignment, how each contributes to the bigger picture of my academics, and my vision as a Civil Engineer. Each step of the learning process is a brick in the foundation of my dream. I regard setbacks and successes alike as opportunities for growth and learning, upholding an author's perspective of studying as “a form of self-respect".

In conclusion, nothing motivates me more than the vivid mental picture of becoming a professional Civil Engineering degree holder from North Carolina A&T State University. Recalling this image keeps me focused on my academic task, as it is my pathway to achieving this dream. The Varsity Tutors Scholarship will not only provide financial assistance but also a reassurance and vindication of my commitment to my studies.

Thank you for considering my application. I assure you of my determination and commitment to make the most out of this scholarship opportunity.

Yours sincerely,
Cayman Humphrey.
