What Education Means To Me by Caylun - October 2022 Scholarship Essay
Education is a very vague word to me. Education is defined as an enlightening experience. However, that word seems to get lost in the general context of school education. When we think of education we associate that word majority of the time with learning subjects at school. In reality, education can be pushed toward any idea.
The prompt “What Education Means To Me” is very confusing to me. I’m honestly not clear on if that's regarding school taught education or general education. Therefore, I will approach the prompt from both angles. Education being as broad as it is works for everyone. Everyone out there has something they’re the most educated on out of all the things they know. Whether it be an outside interest or an in school interest.
Being well educated at school is important; But not near as important as being outside educated. Otherwise called “street smart”. Personally, I think it is more needed. I do see the necessity of school although. Being knowledgeable in school subjects can help you move further in life. Big, important jobs typically require good grades and a successful school career. For example, a surgeon. In this scenario you would want someone who did great in medical school. Not someone who didn’t care to learn what was needed. Someone qualified. Different kinds of smarts are needed for different areas.
Falling more reliant on outside knowledge is perfectly okay. Taking things you know and past experiences and applying them to current events can save your life, or another. While not every situation will be that drastic. In the worst case, it could be. I feel as though outside smarts apply a lot more to someone's development and personality. How good you are at science doesn’t give me any idea of who you are. How you behave and react to situations gives me all I need to know. I always think of it as an end of the world scenario. If the world ended, I don’t think I am going to need much school knowledge to get by. Of course; some. But, not near as much as I would outside. A persons’ emotional intelligence means much more to me than their school work or grades.
As a general consensus, of course school is good in today's world and general. I appreciate an environment where I am brought to learn new things everyday. However, I don’t believe it's nearly as important as other forms of education.
