Careers and Personal Finance Class by Cayden - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
What do you want to be when you grow up? Where do you want to go to college? What plans do you have for your future? As a senior in high school these are the hard questions I am constantly being asked by family & friend. I have some ideas, but like most seniors I'm not sure. I wish I had taken a class to help me prepare better for my future. Classes that would have helped me would be Careers and Personal Finance. You could take one in the fall and the other in the spring. This should be required your Junior year of high school to prepare you for being a Senior and planning your future.
I am still unsure about what kind of job I want in the future. We took a Careers class in 8th grade. That feels like forever ago and my interests have changed a lot since then. Studying different kinds of careers again in high school, when you are closer to going to college and declaring a major would have been more helpful. Learning what kinds of jobs there are, and different companies allows students to see more possibilities. Then they can explore what job field is really the best fit for their future.
I got a job last summer working at our neighborhood HOA. I was able to open a student checking account and start learning about spending my own money. I think a personal finance class that focuses on learning how to handle money would be so helpful. This class could focus on balancing your checkbook, budgeting, investing, retirement, life insurance, health insurance, and everyday spending choices.
High schools should most defiantly put more emphasis on careers and personal finance classes. I think many Senior feel like I do. They are just starting to learn how money works and trying to figure out what kind of job they want in the future. These are huge life decisions were about to make, help us prepare for our future.
