My Non-Traditional Method of Learning by Catherine - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

One way that I learn non-traditionally is by watching television. Now, you may be asking yourself how I learn by watching television. I have started learning how to speak and understand Spanish by watching television in Spanish. It was a non-traditional way of learning that I was taught by a friend of mine who also learned Spanish by watching television. My favorite show to watch in Spanish is Modern Family because it is a show that I have seen many times and know the show like it’s the back of my hand. By watching a show that I had seen previously, I was able to learn how to translate the words I know in English into Spanish. Additionally, I can learn the flow of Spanish conversations rather than learning individual words of vocabulary and grammar that are taught in traditional Spanish classes.
When I began learning Spanish by watching television, the speed and amount of words that were unknown was slightly overwhelming but as I continued to watch television and immerse myself in the language, I surprised myself by how easily I have been able to pick up the language. After beginning to learn Spanish by watching television, I have had conversations with native Spanish speakers and am finally accomplishing a lifelong goal of mine to learn the Spanish language. I am so grateful for this opportunity to learn Spanish by watching television because it allows me to stay engaged in something that I chose to learn while picking up new information every day that can be used in so many areas of my life.
