College dreams by Catherine - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
College, the place necessary for growth and fulfillment. At least that is what most of us students have been told. Since grade school I have had grandparents, teachers, neighbors, and everyone else breathe down my neck about how important college is and how it is imperative that I go. Now this of course, did not motivate me. Was I supposed to take them at their mere word? Surely not everyone thinks college is this important right? I have made some friends along the years who have specialized in a trade. For instance, a great friend of mine has a father who taught him how to repair air conditioning units. So, they now work happily together. My friend is considering not going to college and following in his father’s footsteps. I don’t blame him, for he’s doing what he sees is best for him and his desired future. I on the other hand have decided to go to college.
My reason for attending college is not to fulfill the social norms of schooling, but rather because I believe it will help me further my dreams of being a Dr. of Physical Therapy. I know college can be a stepping stool for success, in fact, it already has been. In a unique collegiate high school opportunity at my hometown community college I have been able to start college two years early. College has taught me so much, from textbook material to social skills. I know that one can survive without college and live a pretty great life. For me though, I know that college has already and will continue to benefit me. I hope that each person finds a dream. It doesn’t matter whether it has to do with physical therapy or air conditioning, as long as they have one. Then they can look at college for all that it is and decide if its best for them. I believe college is important and it’s here to help people achieve their dreams.
