How I learn best. by Cassy - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
I find that the most common mistake in adult learning facilities is to treat the students as though they are still in High School. I believe that teaching in a concise forward moving manner awards those that are genuinely serious about learning while weeding out those that have no interest in being in college.
When a teacher chooses to babysit their class or taking a lets all be friends approach students that are their ready to learn rapidly lose respect for their instructor and will begin to dread attending said class. With a few exceptions everyone attending college is an adult and should be expected to approach their studies as such.
While very few can maintain a state of avidly paying attention when the instructor "drones" on about the topic, serious students find it off putting when the instructor babies the students. By this I mean instructors that feel the need to explain every common sense simple detail of what is being taught. Students in college are old enough to do prior research to gain basic knowledge of what is being taught in the course. With that being said approaching students with juvenile humor trying to be seen as cool is just as annoying.
For an instructor to truly capture my attention their approach should be professional, knowledgeable, and have a good speaking style.
