Just Go With It by Cassidy - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

“Describe one New Year’s resolution that will help you become a better student in 2016”
Working out, eating healthier, and spending more time with family are three of the most common new year’s resolutions every year. You commonly hear people talking about how they are going to hit the gym or plan a family vacation. The odds of people following through with new year’s resolutions are usually very slim. Those resolutions often obtain to adults, but what about students? Do students make resolutions and actually follow through with them?
As a student myself, I would like to believe that other students also set goals and work to achieve them. Every year, I often say, “I’m going to get better grades” or “I’m going to take better notes and study more.” This year I have decided to change it up and think more deeply about it. What could I do to become a better student? After contemplating hard about it, I came up with a very simple answer; go with it.
Everybody knows that life happens and there are many things that occur out of our control. There is constantly tests, quizzes, and note-taking that need to get done. For young adults, everything thrown at us can be overwhelming and extremely stressful. Part of my resolution to “just go with it”, consists of breathing. When I’m studying and feel like my brain has reached its max capacity and could blow up at any second, I am going to put my books down and take deep breaths. Regular breathing exercises can be remarkably beneficial.
Often times in class, I find myself distracted by technology or work for other classes. Half paying attention to what the teacher is saying can get you by, but do you actually learn anything? My second part to “just go with it” is to put away my things and give my 100% focus on what's around me. I believe this is extremely important not only in the classroom, but also in everyday life. We get caught up doing a million things at once, that we forget to see what’s going on around us. I am going to try my best to focus on what is being taught and do my best to apply it.
Have you ever gotten that awful shaky feeling right before an important test? Your hands start to sweat, your legs are bouncing uncontrollably, and your heart rate increases rapidly. I think everyone knows that gut-wrenching feeling. Most students stress and lose immense amount of sleep cramming and worrying about a test. I used to be one of those worry warts, until I realized that i do worse on a test when I panic about it. If I go into it prepared and calm, I believe I can achieve anything.
“Just go with it” may sound too laid back for some people, but I believe it can be an effective way in becoming a better student. We are humans, therefore we are not perfect and we are not designed to keep going for eternity. We need breaks or five minutes to ourselves every once in awhile. I recently have found that I am more successful when I focus, breathe, and relax. I am going to stick to my new year's resolution because with these small, but important tactics, I know I can be my best self and reach my full potential as a student.
