Life lesson by Cassidy - November 2013 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my years of schooling I have had to overcome obstacles and make tough decisions. The most valuable lesson I have learned in high school is to just be yourself and not judge others or bully. Most teenagers are so caught up in what other people think about them, then caring about themselves.
There has been a huge increase in the amount of bullying. Not only in my high school and the schools in my community, but schools nationwide are being faced with the same problem. Since technology is an active part of most teenagers lives today. No one can just go up to someone they have a problem with and talk it out. Everyone turn to social media to talk about each other and cause fights. Cyber bullying is a really bad problem our school has, and it is really sad. At least once a week someone is called to the office over a twitter fight, and I think that is really immature. High school is all about growing up and become mature adults. To me causing a scene on social media is not a sign of growing up, if anything it makes me less mature. Every time I log onto my twitter I see more than one fight or argument between two or more people. The worst part is that it could be people from another school or someone they don’t even know. I personally believe that if people were just themselves that less bullying would occur. When you don’t act like the person you were raised to be, or act like you are supposed to act, that puts a huge target on your back. By that I mean it typically causes people to not like you or the way your acting. This causes fights between groups or friends, and it should not happen. Cliques are frequently found in any high schools. Typically if you are not in the same group or clique and you cannot associate with people in the opposite cliques. This causes so many problems in our school. It is really bad when you walk down the hallway and you can just see all the different groups of people. I believe that you should be able to talk to whoever you want you’re not always going to have that group of people after high school.
I hope that one day everyone opens their eyes and realizes just how bad bullying can affect everyone’s lives. I want other people to learn the valuable lesson I learned from high school and just be yourself and do not bully others.
