An Occupational Dream by Cassidy - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
The passion for my future occupation comes from my past. I had a need for occupational therapy when I was a child and my therapist worked with me to reduce the impact of my sensory issues. When I was young, I often complained about being tired after doing something as simple as walking to the end of our driveway. My occupational therapist diagnosed me with hypotonia, when I could have been labeled as lazy or uncooperative. Because of the early intervention, my sensory issues did not have such a profound effect on my life. Many children have sensory issues that get written off as behavioral outbreaks, just as mine had. My goal is to help children, just like how my therapist helped me, to overcome challenges, gain autonomy, and become stronger. A degree in occupational therapy will allow me to fulfill my goal of helping people become more autonomous and live life to the fullest. Seeing the joy and excitement in the faces of my patients as they are strong enough to do things for themselves is what makes me excited to pursue this dream.
This work will be very fulfilling and I am excited to come to the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse in August to start my journey.
