With the unfortunate necessity of always having our phones on us they have become the ultimate distraction. For myself I have found social media to be a difficulty when I’m trying to concentrate on an assignment that I don’t want to be doing. It is easy to pull out your phone to send a text or search something and then find yourself scrolling down a completely different black hole of information hours later. Managing my social media time is something that I am still learning. While it can be the ultimate distraction, I have been finding more productive ways to use social media.
Social media is a great place to find resources for academic and scholarship opportunities. I follow some of my favorite heritage institutions on social media and through those accounts I have found great free resources such as the National Library of Ireland’s free lecture series. In addition, social media accounts for potential schools and programs have helped me determine where I might be a good fit. Although the most unexpected and helpful function of social media sites to me right now is locating additional scholarships. I discovered this scholarship application through a website an educational influencer posted. I currently have a spreadsheet of 60 plus scholarships that I qualify for and would like to apply to. Many of these I found through calls for applications posted on Instagram or scholarship compiling websites that were recommended to me through social media channels. While I still get sucked down into black holes of distracting content sometimes, I have found ways to make my time of social media more productive.
