Reaching Those Who Are Alone by Casey - February 2020 Scholarship Essay
China, Brazil, America, no matter where you are or where you end up, all around the world, there are millions of children living in orphanages. Whether their parents died or their home life is not suitable, children are not receiving the care and love that they deserve and desire. Thus, if I were to start a nonprofit organization, it would benefit and support orphans all around the world.
Before my parents adopted me, for the first year of my life, I lived in an orphanage. Although I do not remember what it was like living there, I have had the opportunity to travel to Portugal and work with students living in orphanages the past couple of years. Going there and playing with the children opened my eyes to realize how blessed I am to be living in a loving home. However, it also showed me how broken this world is and that there are still children that do not have anyone, feeling as if they have no value.
Although care workers are providing the children’s physical needs, there is only so much that they can do. With numerous children coming from various backgrounds, there is just no way that the orphans receive the emotional care and support that they need. They do not know what it is like to have a mentor who is always there, leading them, providing wisdom and understanding. Thus, this is the reason for my organization.
My organization would provide activities and events, giving the orphans the attention and love that they crave. However, not only would we play games with them, but we would also teach them valuable life skills and help them create a better future for themselves. We would build personal relationships and mentorships, guiding them along the way. The focus of the organization would be to show the students that they do matter.
I know that I will never be able to fix all of the brokenness in the world. However, if I can change the life of just one person, nothing else will matter. This topic hits close to home. Living in and visiting orphanages have personally affected me. Orphanages do not receive enough attention. Furthermore, orphans, in general, do not receive enough attention. Orphans are everyday humans, just like you and me, who need a purpose, and that is the reason for my organization. This would be my way of given back.
