Electives by Casey - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
Electives may seem as though they are simple and fun classes to take, however they serve as a dual purpose. They are both enjoyable, yet important classes to take in high school. The list of electives can practically go on forever, but some of them can include culinary class, shop class, or home economics. I have taken many electives, however the one that has impacted me the most has been home economics. Home economics has impacted my education by teaching me how to cook, sew, and iron.
Knowing how to cook, sew, and iron are important factors in everyday life. My education and knowledge over these topics has greatly increased ever since I decided to enroll in the course. Cooking is a very important topic that people everywhere should learn how to do because it creates a starting point in their life in becoming more independent. This class has built me character and allows me to rely on myself more often. Because it has helped me learn how to become more independent, I am now more reliable on myself for my education, rather than the people around me. Not only did the class teach me how to cook, but it also taught me how to become more self-sufficient in life and in furthering my education.
Home economics has also taught me two other skills that I still use today. Those skills include knowing how to sew and iron. These two go hand in hand with each other because they both involve an article of clothing. Knowing how to sew has taught me how to handle everyday problems that come up in my life, as well as in my education. If a button falls off my shirt, I know how to fix it, thanks to this class. But, the same goes for a problem that may come up in my education. If a problem arises, then I would know how to piece that problem together in order to find a solution. The same goes with knowing how to iron out clothes. If my shirt comes out of the dryer wrinkled, I know how to use the iron in a proper manner in order to fix the problem. This ties with my education because knowing how to sew and iron has taught me problem-solving skills so I can be prepared for any situation that may arise.
Overall, home economics has taught me skills including knowing how to cook, sew, and iron. These skills have impacted my education by teaching me how to become more self-sufficient and knowing how to problem solve in an efficient manner. The class has helped me with my household knowledge, as well as, furthering my education in the school world. The core classes may seem like they are the only classes that matter, however electives are more important to a person’s education than it may seem.
