It's Not Just About the Money by Carrie - July 2015 Scholarship Essay
Establishing where I want to work by obtaining a variety of volunteering positions or internships is what I want to really succeed in doing throughout my college career. Goals have already been set for my grades, and finding what classes suit me best. However, that just is not enough. Gaining inside knowledge in a variety of settings such as schools, shelters, churches, and treatment centers would enable me to grow as a person and to find where I really want to work at once I am out of school because the last thing I want to do is to not be happy where I am working.
Volunteering is not like a job, and some people look at me sideways when I let them know I want to volunteer, because in the world we live in today, there are so many financial pressures on young people whether it be from loans, books, trying to afford everyday bills, and to feed yourself, volunteering just does not make sense, because you don’t get paid. In my lifetime though I found that many pleasures come free, yet the things we are paid for, are seemingly less enjoyed than what people nowadays do get paid for. I don’t want that to be me. Achieving a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Social Work is something that is time consuming in itself, but if I could volunteer at a shelter helping the homeless, or at a school mentoring students I would feel better knowing I am using my time to help people, as well as gaining more knowledge in the field.
