Diverse Interests in One Program by Carrie - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I were to create an extra curricular activity for my high school it would probably be one in the field of compact agriculture. When I say that, I mainly refer to types of growing like vertical gardens and techniques that are more easily compacted like hydroponics and aeroponics. A club that is dedicated to this garden could learn about nutrition, plants, and technology and supply their school with the products of said garden. The club could also aid those who have a struggle with hunger in the community, or even farmers market sales to support the club and school.
My motivation for this was sparked by an article I read a few years ago that linked obesity to poor education regarding food and nutrition. This was especially highlighted by the included statistic that linked excess meat consumption, especially excess red meat consum piton, and bowel cancer. This article shocked me into learning about my intake. I think that this club would be really interesting for a wide range of people because of all the overlapping interests that are included. People could do anything from plant disease analysis and study to programming for software to analyze and organize collected data to engineering the best growing configuration to construction to build these structures. The sense of community it would bring is a definite plus.
