Future Lessons by Carolina - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
Often times, when we think of learning, we think of our education. We tend to think about the classes we have taken and sat through absorbing the information given to us like sponges. How we’ve learned that mutations arise from the sequence of four nucleotides in biology, how SOH CAH TOA can help you remember the definitions for the trigonometric functions in algebra, and everything else that we've learned since kindergarten and the years to come. We think about our majors and minors and what classes that entails. We count the years we have left of our education anxiously waiting to walk the stage. But, learning does not stop the day I hope to walk the stage. I want to learn beyond my classes, I want to learn from the people I will encounter.
As of right now, I am planning to double major in public health and sociology and minor in political science. I want to do something for the well being of others, not just through my acts towards the individuals I’ll meet, but for everyone. I want to work with people, people of all kinds, and listen to their worries and their concerns, and as I sit there with them, I want to learn from them. I'll learn why they worry, and Ill learn where their worries come from, and Ill learn how I can help them. I want to take what I learn from the education I will receive, from the bachelors, masters, and the Ph.D. I intend to receive to give a pathway to people who struggle. I want to see what my world looks like, and see why my world looks the way it does, I want to ask questions and find answers.
I’m going, to be honest, I don't know where I will be or what I will do 25 years from now. But, what I do know, is that wherever I am, and whatever I do, I want to continue to learn.
