Creative Emphasis by Carmen - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

Schools today have many subjects that can pertain to any student. The subjects mainly focused on today are the core subjects, such as math, history, science, etc. Other subjects that are less focused on are usually the creative classes, like art, band, theatre, ceramics. The creative subjects should have more credit and emphasis, specifically band. In band students learn a multitude of life skills, from social skills, to professional skills.
Students learn many social skills. On a daily basis students deal with other students, teachers, and even professional musicians. Band teaches the students to be comfortable with new people coming in every day. Band also teaches students to get comfortable with playing their instruments in front of those professionals, so they can get used to going out into a professional environment and not be nervous about playing for others. The students can go out and get a gig playing jazz, or even concert music, with professional musicians.
Band can also teach students to be more comfortable with failure. The education system teaches students that it is unacceptable to fail. It teaches students that they will not become successful if they fail more than once. When doing music you’re going to fail, there is not much of a way around that. Teachers teach students it is okay to fail, and usually there will not be any repercussions with failure, other than learning how to do it better the next time. Music is a pretty competitive industry, and it can be difficult to get your foot in a door. It will show them that it’s good to take opportunities even if you fail.
Band shows students many different ways they can succeed without being perfect. It can teach them to have a new found love for music, and take risks without fear of repercussion. These very reasons are why creative subjects, not only band, should have more emphasis in schools.
