Different Perspectives by Carly - March 2024 Scholarship Essay

For the past six years, volleyball has taken up most of my time, I have played for my school and club. Volleyball has become a very important part of my life, I have spent countless weekends at tournaments and countless hours after school at practice. However, the most important thing in my life is my faith. I am a Christian and my walk with the Lord is much more important to me than volleyball. Throughout my experience, I have learned many ways to intertwine my faith with playing volleyball. One way I do this is by giving all the glory to God. While playing, every point I score and every accomplishment I achieve is to glorify God. He is the one who gave me the ability to do everything including playing volleyball therefore I will use it to glorify him.
I was a middle hitter for the greater part of my volleyball career. As a middle, I must work closely with the setter. The setter and I must work together to get a point. She must set me a good ball for me to be able to execute a good hit resulting in a kill/point. However, in my sixteens club year, my setter came from a different background, she was a Muslim. We had different perspectives in life, but we had to look past that and work together to execute for our team. We had to leave all our differences at the door because on the court we were on the same team all fighting for the same thing.
Off the court, we actually became friends as well, we were respectful of eachothers views. It was unnessacary to debate eachother and try to change eachothers viewpoint. We knew that neither of us would suceed it converting the other to their own relegion. Therefore, we talked more about other things than our faith. This experience helped me learn about the Islamic faith and some of their convictions. She had convictions about covering her legs and would wear legging instead of spande. I learned that it is important to embrace other people perspectives. I will always remember that people with different beliefs and perspectives will see things differently and may see something we don’t. It is important to ensure you always include peoples views on different things.
