Daisy Buchanan by Carlie - April 2014 Scholarship Essay
In my eleventh grade English Class we read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and I feel in love with it. I loved the mystery throughout the novel and the suspense. The author of the story, Nick Carraway, describes all of the characters in such detail. My most favorite character in the book is Daisy Buchanan. She is Nick's cousin and was explained as one of the most beautiful women in the world.
The Great Gatsby was set in the 1920's, when women were not allowed to work nor do anything besides be a mother. Daisy wanted more than that. She wanted to be noticed. Daisy was extremely intelligent; she knew her social rank as a woman and knew what she had to do to succeed. The only thing a woman could do to succeed, in that time, was be gorgeous and Daisy used her good looks to her advantage and did so.
When I read this book and met Daisy she definitely influenced me. When I graduate from college I hope to be as smart as Daisy in my own social class so that I can succeed like she did. I will use my newly found education and my memories of Daisy to get as far as possible in life.
I plan to major in Communications in college and work with lower class people after I graduate. I feel that in order to do my job correctly, I will have to take advantage of some of my own personality traits in order to connect with my clients on a personal level. Through my outgoing personality, I will show them I understand their situations according to their social classes so that I can help them. Ultimately, my goal when helping these people will be to pull them out of poverty and help them begin a new life.
Daisy was a strong, beautiful and intelligent woman. She did the most for herself that she could in that day and age; and with the same mind set I plan to do the same for myself with her influences close to my heart.
