Promoting Computer Literacy by Carleigh - January 2023 Scholarship Essay
In today's fast-paced and technology-driven world, it is essential for individuals to have a basic understanding of computer literacy and the skills that are required in the workforce. One elective or extracurricular activity that I believe should be a required class is a general computer literacy course, which would include instruction on the use of the Microsoft Suite, safe data practices, and other basic computer skills that are essential for success in the modern world.
One of the key reasons why I believe this class should be required is that it would ensure that all students have a basic understanding of the tools and technologies that are used in the workplace. With the majority of jobs now requiring some level of computer proficiency, it is essential that individuals have a basic understanding of how to use common software and technology tools, such as the Microsoft Suite. By making this class a required component of a student's education, they will be better prepared to enter the workforce and be more competitive in their job search.
Another benefit of a required computer literacy class would be the emphasis on safe data practices. With so much personal and sensitive information stored electronically, it's important for individuals to understand how to protect their data and the importance of cyber security. By including instruction on topics such as data encryption, two-factor authentication and password security in this class, students would learn to be more cautious and more cautious when it comes to protecting their personal data.
It's worth considering that this class might not be a suitable fit for everyone, some people might already have good computer skills they've learned outside of a school setting.
Additionally, some students may have prior experience and knowledge in the area and may find the class redundant. Thus, to address this concern, it would be important to have different levels of the class to accommodate students with different abilities.
In conclusion, a general computer literacy course that includes instruction on the use of the Microsoft Suite, safe data practices, and other basic computer skills is an elective activity that I believe should be required for all students. It would provide students with the essential skills they need to be successful in the workforce and help them to become more competitive in the job market. By including instruction on safe data practices, this class would also help students to understand the importance of cyber security and the protection of their personal data.
