Built to Be Heard by Carina - April 2026 Scholarship Essay
Rob Brown once said, “If you can speak, you can influence. If you can influence, you can change lives.” That quote stays with me because in the next few years, the skill I most want to master is confident public speaking. I have already had some experience with advocacy and lobbying, but I want to strengthen my voice so that when I speak, people listen, remember, and feel inspired to act.
This goal is personal to me because imposter syndrome is real. As a Latina stepping into spaces where representation is still limited, there are times when self-doubt tries to make me question whether I belong. Over time, I have learned that confidence is not something people are simply born with. It is built through preparation, practice, and believing that your voice deserves to be heard. I want to walk into every room knowing I earned my seat at the table.
I have already started developing this skill through internships and leadership opportunities. Working with Danilo Burgos and Quetcy Lozada showed me how powerful communication can be when it is used to help communities and solve problems. I have also balanced high school while completing college coursework at Community College of Philadelphia, which has taught me discipline, maturity, and resilience.
To continue growing, I plan to join debate, mock trial, and student leadership programs in college. I want to challenge myself to speak in front of others more often, think quickly under pressure, and learn from people who lead with confidence and authenticity. I know growth will come from stepping outside of my comfort zone again and again.
Mastering public speaking is about more than becoming a strong speaker. It is about becoming a leader who can advocate for others and open doors for the next generation. I want younger girls who look like me to see that their voice has power too.
