Humor in Education by Camryn - February 2023 Scholarship Essay

Laughter truly is the best medicine! Not only does it boost our mood and relieve stress, but it also has a big impact on education. A sense of humor can lighten up a boring lecture, make students more engaged and help to create a positive classroom atmosphere. And let's face it, we could all use a good laugh in our daily lives, especially during a long school day.
So, what exactly happens to our bodies when we laugh and smile? When we laugh, our brain releases endorphins which are feel-good chemicals that make us feel happy and relaxed. And when we smile, it triggers a release of serotonin, which is another neurotransmitter that helps improve our mood. Basically, laughter and smiling can turn a frown upside down!

In a classroom setting, incorporating humor can make learning more enjoyable for students. If a teacher can make a lesson entertaining, students will be more likely to pay attention and retain information. For example, if a science teacher turns the laws of gravity into a joke, students will be more likely to remember it because they associate the information with a positive memory. Personally, I don't like thinking about gravity. It brings me down.

Humor also has a way of breaking down barriers and bringing people together. In a classroom full of students with diverse backgrounds and personalities, a little bit of humor can help create a sense of community and inclusiveness. This can lead to a more collaborative and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and participating in class discussions.

However, it’s important to note that not all jokes are created equal. It’s important to steer clear of humor that may be offensive or hurtful to some students. Instead, opt for humor that is inclusive, lighthearted and appropriate for all.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “But what about the academics? Won’t incorporating humor take away from the serious business of learning?” Actually, research has shown that humor can actually enhance the learning process. Studies have shown that when people are in a positive mood, they tend to be more creative, innovative and better problem solvers. In other words, humor can lead to a-ha moments and better problem solving skills.

In conclusion, incorporating humor in the classroom can have a big impact on education. It can help create a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere, make lessons more enjoyable, and even enhance the learning process. So, don’t be afraid to bring a little humor into your daily routine, whether you’re a teacher or a student. Let’s all strive to create a happier, more joke-filled world, one classroom at a time.

And remember, a smile a day keeps the tutors away!
