The Power of Language by Campbell - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

In the event that roles were reversed and I, a senior in high school, had the privilege and honor of teaching students I would most certainly advise them in the field of language arts.

The English language is a beautiful creature, connecting cultures and unifying people across the globe. Nelson Mandela once said ,"Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history, appreciate their poetry, or savor their songs." The ability to communicate with one another empowers the human race while also giving us a deep appreciation of societies other than our own. Additionally language aids in productivity, for we can accomplish much more together than we can as individuals.

While improving our relations with others, language also acts a resource for self development. Words allow one to express the inner desires of his or her heart. This is particularly crucial when discovering ones sense of self and personal identity. In no way is identity defined by language, however identity can be expanded through the expansion of linguistic skills. Wigginstein stated, "The limits of my language means the limits of my world". In other words, language opens the door for a countless number of possibilities to be explored.

English teachers have always held a special place in my heart. Throughout my educational career, these teachers have often been the bright spots and positive influences motivating me to pursue my dreams. When I was in fifth grade I was diagnosed with a condition known as JME or juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. Epilepsy has altered many aspects of my life however I refuse to view this in a negative light thanks to the influence of AP Language teacher, Mrs. Donald who shares the same condition. In fact, Mrs. Donald's case is much worse than mine as she frequently endures seizures as well as consistent migraines. Though in constant pain and discomfort due her condition, she never for a moment ceases to show her students immense love and compassion. We have shared many conversations on the topic of JME and have come to this conclusion; Epilepsy does not hinder me or limit my future ambitions. Instead, epilepsy empowers me by strengthening by faith, family, and will to succeed. Without the impact of Mrs. Donald on my life, my perspective would look much different.

In conclusion, the power of a teachers influence can never be fully understood, especially if that teacher equips his or her students with the versatile ability of communication through language. If I was ever fortunate enough to assume such a role I would truly be grateful
