The Noble Nick Carraway by Camillia - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

One of the most influential and noble characters that I have ever read about is Nick Carraway from the book The Great Gatsby. Nick was the middle class cousin, neighbor, and employee of the wealthy people that live in New York around the time the stock market was booming. Through all of the wealth, parties, and temptations that he encounters, he remains the same charismatic and humble fellow that he was from the start.

In the beginning of the book, it’s starts off with Nick narrating his own life all the way up to meeting up with his cousin, Daisy and his neighbor Jay Gatsby. He falls into the middle of love triangles, murders, and lies. Even in between the controversies, he was able to stay in the background and slowly alleviate the issues surrounding the people around him. He becomes good friends with Gatsby and later began accompanying to different events and outings to the city. Because of the close bond he makes with Gatsby, he enters a world filled with lies and deceit and he had to be a fly on the wall to it all. He tried to advise the people around him of the hurt and chaos that can happen if they don’t take responsibility and cautiousness in what they were doing. They dis not listen, but he stuck by them to the end.

Although Nick was trapped in turmoil, he knew who he was and he made sure that he did not lose his personality in the mix of things. He held on to his dignity and addressed problems when he could. He is an admirable character because no matter what, he never changed. Not for money, power, or fame.
