The Impaction Of AVID by Cameron - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

In the eighth grade, I was always taught the value of higher education and going to college is the best opportunity to start a new cycle of life for the future generations of my family name. So upon learning that La Quinta High School would be offering an AVID program I knew I had to take advantage of the program. AVID offers leadership roles, exposure to higher-level classes, tutors, and information on all colleges one would want to apply to. After being in the program for almost four years, the program has impacted me immensely. I have set higher standards for myself not just only in school but also in life. Before entering the program I had mental blocks that I could not get into any colleges because no one in my family has ever been and how would I even afford it. I'm the first person in my family to ever make an attempt to go to college or even think about how a college degree will affect me or my future family. In the steps of becoming the AVID scholar I am today, I have done several hours of volunteer work with the boys and girls club, trash pick up at the Salton Sea, and even set up charity events for La Quinta High School. The AVID staff has helped give me ideas on what my academic goals and life goals should be and how to accomplish them. The AVID staff has pushed me into being on the honor roll every year so far, brought an F in my biology class to a B, showed me the importance of volunteering, and led me to what colleges suit me best. Every year they have challenged me to take harder classes and made me believe I’m capable of doing more than what I used to think I've made several connections with the AVID family that has improved me to be a better person and showed me how to be successful and how to fight adversity that's randomly thrown upon me.
When signing the forms to attempt to become an AVID student/Scholar, I never knew that I would be impacted by the tough love and guidance that would soon give me thought on what I want to do and how I should be as a person.
