A Helping Hand by Cameron - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
Service has been a huge part of my life and I always enjoy being able to give back to those in need. People in my life have always helped along the way and have always been there to support so I feel that I should be willing to do the same thing. One thing that I noticed with service is that in many cases, people give food and clothing to the homeless and then continue to go about their day. In many cases, homeless people at times just want someone they can talk to or someone to actually listen to them versus always being disregarded as not being human and only been seen as objects. With the opportunity to create a high school extracurricular activity, I would want to create a service-based group that not only brought food and clothing to the homeless but also set down and converse with them.
With this extracurricular, the organization would pack food and clothing for the homeless two days out of the week and would also be ready to sit down and converse with the homeless. Through conversing, we get to learn more about them and their personal struggles, as well as providing them with information that can help them through their struggles. This information can include and is not limited to the nearest shelters, the nearest churches that provide food to the homeless, and tips to get through their rough experiences. Too many service ministries most times just give food out to individuals and won’t sit to talk to them. With this extracurricular, I want to not only help them at the moment but as well give them the help they need to obtain a better living. I want to be able to give them tips to be able to find a job or resources that can help them get back on their feet. With this organization, I also want to be able to educate students who may not fully understand the struggle that those are homeless are going through. I want to make an impact not on the homeless, but on those who don’t know about the struggle the homeless go through. This way, people won’t just walk by the homeless and don’t see them as humans. They shouldn’t just simply go past them without acknowledging their existence and if possible, being any type of help to them whether it gives them money, food or just speaking to them and having a conversation with them.
With this extracurricular organization, I’ll be able to help the homeless and be able to make their life easier. Everyone struggles within their life and needs help along the way. With this organization, I will be able to make an impact on other peoples’ lives. No one deserves to feel as if they’re not worth being helped or not worth being regarded as a human. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes in life, and everyone needs help at some point in their life. This extracurricular will be able to make a huge impact on the homeless and make their life a little easier.
