If I Were a Professor by Cameron - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a college professor I would choose to teach mathematics, it’s a subject that’s exciting and interesting and constantly growing. STEAM is an approach to education that ties together the studies of science, technology, engineering, and math through the application of art and design. With these new curricula on the rise, mathematics has become a large part of education. Teaching a math class that engages and challenges students in fun and creative ways is something we need in order to get students interested and proficient in mathematics.
Math is used every day in many careers, whether you’re writing a computer program, designing a stage set, or working at a register; math is a versatile tool. It’s used in all forms of science from biology and chemistry to physics, sciences that drive and develop our world. But it is also used to make beautiful art and animations, like fractals and Pixar movies. Because of this variety, a firm understanding of mathematics is an advantage in the job market, enabling people to become more skilled employees.
I would teach math with the goal of changing the way math is viewed from an arcane subject to a relatable, logical subject that can be applied to many differing practices. Mathematics has the potential to enrich and transform many subjects given the right application and creativity. I think that by creating a wider interest in mathematics we could bring about revolutionary thinking, engaging the minds of students and helping us to think about and solve problems in more creative and lasting ways.
