A very important part of moving on to college is to have new experiences. Studying abroad would be one of the most life changing experiences anyone could ever have. All students should be required to study abroad because everyone should experience a different culture and gain the independence needed for being on your own later in life.
All students should be required to study abroad to experience a different culture than their own. Many students may say that they already have an idea of another culture from multiple foreign language classes during high school, but one cannot fully understand a different culture until you are completely immersed in it. Studying abroad could be life changing to some people, allowing them to not only be immersed in a different culture, but also be able to learn a new language. Knowing multiple languages can be an extremely useful skill for any sort of job search, weather it be teaching or working for the government. The knowledge of a second, or even third language cannot do anything but help you in life. Experiencing a new, different culture can change someone’s life in a multitude of ways, and each and every one of them is amazing.
Studying abroad may be the first time a college student has to be completely independent, if they are staying local for college. While many parents want their children to stay home for college so they can still live at home and be “their babies,” many students miss out on an incredible opportunity to gain independence that they are going to need later in life. While studying abroad, you would be with people that you don’t really know at first, but they will quickly become a second family. Since the students are not at home with their parents, they will start to become independent; doing their own laundry, getting up on their own, making their own decisions on important life choices, everything that their parents once helped them with they would now be forced to do on their own. If students don’t get the experience of studying abroad and stay local throughout their entire college career, they may never be able to gain that vital independence they need during the most important years of their lives.
All students should be required to study abroad. This is because many students have never experienced another culture so intensely. While being immersed in this new culture, they will also be able to gain vital skills in independence that will help them throughout their entire life. Studying abroad can be the most amazing experience of a young students life. They will come back with a new outlook on life and everything around them.
